This is a demonstration of some of the detail you can expect in your prints
or digital downloads. Results may vary. Paula Lunt of Tenants Harbor is our
"model' for this particular demonstration.
This first picture is typical of what you will find in the online race galleries:
The gallery images are "downsized" to conserve on web server space
and browser loading times. It looks OK on the web, but it doesn't really
do the actual image capture justice.
I have marked five zones on this particular photo. Let's zoom in on each
zone for a closer look:

Thanks (in part) to the high end cameras and lenses in use, the actual
image file is quite large and holds considerable detail.
How much detail?
Well, enough to pick out the paddler's choice of nail polish, for example:
And here you can check out the logo on the paddler's helmet, as well
as the reflections of the Kenduskeag whitewater
in her sunglasses:

Here we can see a detail of the custom paint job the paddler applied to
her kayak:

Here's another detail for you. Looking back at the first photo, were you
aware that the paddler is carrying a whistle?
Note that you can also see
individual strands of hair in her ponytail:

Here's a look at some individual droplets of whitewater near the kayak.
Look closer. You can see microdroplets in addition to the larger droplets!
Using an extremely high shutter speed,
the whitewater is "frozen" in time.

You may not be able to see all of these details in the photo galleries on
this website, but the details are usually there in the finished prints
(most noticeably in the larger print sizes) and also in the full resolution
computer wallpaper/digital downloads!
